As a result of installing our program Quality Time, it has come to our attention that there is a general problem with these programs on Windows® 98 systems.

What exactly is the problem?

FreeCell and Solitaire in versions before Windows® ME had this problem, as documented by the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

In summary, there is not enough always enough stack space for the program to run when other programs hook into the operating system.

Help is at hand, simply follow the steps below.

• First, download our free tool by clicking the link.
• Save the file to your system when prompted (c:\windows is a convenient place for this program).
• Let's say you want to fix FreeCell. Follow the steps below:
  Make a copy of c:\Windows\FreeCell.exe. (Recommended) To do this, follow the steps below:
  • Start Windows® Explorer (press the windows key + E, or use the start menu, and choose run, then type explorer.exe).
  • Navigate to your windows directory (probably C:\WINDOWS), by pressing ALT+D and then typing c:\windows and pressing enter.
  • Windows® may warn you about the files on your system being hidden. If so, click Show Files.
  • Right click FreeCell.exe, and select copy. Then right click on a blank area, and press Paste.
    This will make a copy named "Copy of FreeCell.exe"
• Start the Run Program window (press the windows key+R or use the start menu and choose run)
• Type in the following:
  stackNE FreeCell.exe
• A command prompt will open, with output similar to that listed below.

  This program increases the stack size on the 16 bit program named on the command line to 4000h bytes or the size specified. Known programs with problems are SOL.EXE and FREECELL.EXE. Original stack size was 3000 If you wish to modify the stack size, press 'y' now.

  At this point, type the letter Y in lower case. The program will respond:

  Stack size is now set to 4000
